Barack Obama: Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the Passing of Lady Bird Johnson
July 11, 2007 -- "I join Americans in mourning the loss of one of our most elegant and accomplished first ladies.
Not only was Lady Bird Johnson an important partner in shaping her husband's legacy in the U.S. Senate and the White House, she also established a proud legacy of her own. She was a pioneer in the environmental cause, and a passionate advocate for her husband’s Great Society, in particular the Head Start program.
My thoughts are with her children, Lynda and Luci, her son-in-law, Senator Charles Robb, and her whole family. I hope they find comfort in knowing how fondly Americans everywhere remember this remarkable woman’s contributions to our country."
