September 26, 2007 -- (Washington D.C.) -- Congressman John P. Murtha, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, announced today that the Penn State Electro-Optics Center (EOC), Freeport, PA, has been awarded a $25,000,000 competitive contract from the U.S. Navy to support the development and transition of electro-optic technology.

The five year contract, awarded by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, Patuxent River, MD, involves development, engineering and integration of electro-optic subsystems to support Naval Air platforms.

“The EOC continues to provide our military with essential electro-optic research and development,” said Murtha. “Being awarded this competitive contract is further testament to the quality high-tech work being performed in Armstrong County.”

“This contract demonstrates the effectiveness of the Penn State EOC alliance of industry and academic partners in transitioning electro-optics and related technologies into the hands of our warfighters,” commented Dr. Karl Harris, Director of the EOC.

The work being performed at the EOC and its partnerships with local and national companies has attracted nearly 500 family-sustaining jobs to the region and continues to have a positive impact on our region’s economy.
