Alabama Governor Riley’s Office Comments on Water Decision Announced Today
November 16, 2007 -- MONTGOMERY – Alabama Governor Bob Riley’s office issued the following statement on Friday about the decision announced today concerning water flows impacting Alabama, Georgia and Florida. The decision was announced by U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the White House Office on Environmental Quality:
“Governor Riley is very satisfied and very pleased with the decisions announced today. The need to increase flexibility is exactly what Governor Riley has been stressing, and he greatly appreciates the leadership shown by Secretary Kempthorne, the Corps of Engineers and FERC in their recognition of Alabama’s challenges. The revised flow regime should ensure that no Alabama worker will be laid off due to the drought in the near term. This is enough water to protect operations at the Farley nuclear plant and other Alabama industries. Governor Riley is also pleased the Corps and the Fish and Wildlife Service support increasing the winter pool level at Lake Martin, which is exactly what Governor Riley has requested.”
