Missouri Governor Blunt Readies State in Anticipation of Expected Heavy Rain
March 28, 2008 -- JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Governor Matt Blunt today said state emergency responders are monitoring the weather closely as more rain is anticipated in Missouri. Gov. Blunt said state resources are readily available to assist Missouri families in the event that more flooding occurs in the next few days.
“Missouri has already seen the destruction caused by severe flooding, and forecasts show the possibility of significant rainfall in the coming days,” Gov. Blunt said. “We will be monitoring the weather closely and are prepared to assist should further needs arise. Our emergency responders have done a magnificent job in assisting Missourians who were impacted by the flood and they are ready to meet any new challenges that Mother Nature presents them.”
Large of portions of Missouri are still dealing with the aftermath of recent flooding, and more rain could create additional hardships for Missouri communities. The governor’s first concern is always for the safety of Missourians, and the state will be ready to assist at a moment’s notice should the need arise.
Yesterday, Gov. Blunt and Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder announced that their request for assistance for Missourians in 19 counties was approved by the president. Missourians impacted by the flood in the following counties can now register for individual federal assistance: Bollinger, Carter, Christian, Franklin, Greene, Iron, Jasper, Jefferson, Maries, Newton, Oregon, Phelps, Pulaski, Reynolds, St. Francois, Stone, Texas, Washington and Wayne.
More information about this assistance is available by calling 1-800-621-FEMA or visiting www.FEMA.gov.
Gov. Blunt also reminds Missouri families about the importance of having an emergency plan in place. Missouri’s Ready in 3 program provides guidelines for families to set up emergency plans. Step one is to create a plan for you, your family, and at work. Step two is to prepare an emergency kit for home, car, and work that includes essentials like food, water, and a flashlight. Step three is to listen for information about what to do and where to go during an actual emergency. For more information about Ready in 3, visit www.dhss.mo.gov/Ready_in_3.
