June 3, 2009 -- Washington, D.C. – Senators John Ensign and Harry Reid today announced federal funding to improve safety and emergency preparedness infrastructure at the airports in Boulder City, Tonopah, and Reno-Tahoe. The Department of Transportation will administer the grant funding. Both Boulder City Municipal Airport and Tonopah Airport will receive over $1 million for necessary improvements. Reno-Tahoe International will receive nearly $4 million.

“Safety is always our first concern,” Ensign said. “The Department of Transportation’s funding for aviation improvements ensures that the public has the best access to travel.”

“This funding will help airports throughout the state make important safety upgrades and improvements,” Reid said. “We will always make sure safety in the air and on the ground is given the highest priority in aviation in Nevada, from our largest to our smallest airports.”

Boulder City Municipal Airport will receive over $1 million to make runway improvements and several safety adjustments. The Tonopah Airport will also receive over $1 million to construct an additional runway and to install an emergency generator. The remote location of the Tonopah airport and the weather conditions that often arise in the desert area make the emergency generator a necessity in ensuring safe air travel.

Reno-Tahoe International will utilize their funding for rehabilitation projects, such as taxiway improvements.
