Senator Stabenow on WTO case against China
June 23, 2009 -- Dearborn, MI—Today, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) made the following statement regarding the announcement that the U.S. has filed a World Trade Organization complaint against China for its export restraints on raw materials. The export restraints provide Chinese companies with an unfair competitive advantage over U.S. companies. Senator Stabenow has been leading the fight to hold accountable countries that practice unfair trade. Earlier this year, she introduced the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act of 2009 and is currently working on legislation that would expand our resources for trade enforcement.
“I am pleased that U.S. Trade Representative Kirk is taking the necessary steps to stop unfair Chinese trade policies that violate WTO rules and cost us good-paying, American jobs. Our businesses and workers can successfully compete with anyone if other countries play by the rules all WTO members must follow. Unfortunately, China has consistently ignored these rules by providing illegal subsidies.
“I hope the WTO holds China accountable. As Michigan’s voice in the Senate, I will continue to promote a level playing field for workers here and across the country.”
