9 October 2009 -- FLAGSTAFF, AZ – Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick announced today that the Department of Energy will be making more than $3.7 million available to help develop solar energy in Arizona. The grants are part of $87 million being allocated nationwide, of which $50 million comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The bulk of the funding, $3,328,000, will go to Arizona Public Service to study the impact of running large amounts of photovoltaic electricity through the electric grid. The Flagstaff Community Power pilot project will be the site of these tests, which will determine where technology and infrastructure must be improved so that more consumers can dependably access solar power.

“Solar energy will be an economic engine for our state, and with this project we will be able to clear barriers that might slow its development,” said Rep. Kirkpatrick. “This investment should help improve our electric grid and encourage the growth of the renewable energy industry, creating jobs and opportunities in Arizona.”

Identifying and addressing the technical challenges to ensuring reliable connections with the grid will help solar power providers become cost-competitive much faster. District One would particularly benefit from addressing these obstacles, given its great potential for this growing industry.

The Tucson Solar Initiative will also receive $389,000 to help the city continue to encourage the adoption of solar technology.
