October 19, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that a total of $1,128,500 in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the Recovery Act) will be coming to Iowa to help communities reduce their energy use, cut back on emissions and create jobs.

Specifically, the City of Council Bluffs will receive $571,500 and the City of West Des Moines will receive 557,000 for projects such as residential and commercial building energy efficiency retrofits.

“Iowa is already leading the way in energy efficiently and these Recovery Act dollars will go even further towards reducing energy costs in these communities. Additionally, these projects will create good jobs in Iowa,” said Harkin. “This yet is another example of Recovery Act dollars benefitting our state.”

This Recovery Act funding comes through the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program. Harkin is a senior member of the panel that funds energy initiatives as well as the Appropriations Committee, which helped shape the Recovery Act.
