Rep. Ellsworth Studying New Health Care Overhaul
Remains Firm on 6 Principles of Reform
October 30, 2009 -- WASHINGTON - A new health care reform bill was introduced during a Capitol Hill press conference yesterday. Rep. Brad Ellsworth began reading H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, and issued the following statement about the legislation:
"Yesterday marked another important milestone in the effort to reform our nation's health care system. Now that we have the final framework of a House bill to consider, I will be spending the next several days reading it cover-to-cover and weighing it against the concerns and ideas of 8th District constituents.
"As I consider the proposal, I will be looking to see that it meets my 6 principles of reform:
* Prevents federal tax dollars from funding abortions;
* Reduces long-term health care costs for families, businesses, and government;
* Increases choice and provides more affordable health insurance options for consumers;
* Extends insurance coverage to pre-existing conditions;
* Protects rural patients and health care providers;
* Does not add one penny to the deficit.
"On first glance, I remain concerned about the current language in the bill regarding federal funding and abortion services. As I have said repeatedly, I will not support a bill that I believe would result in federal tax dollars being used to provide abortions. Unless there is stronger language added to protect federal tax dollars and provide pro-life insurance options in the exchange, I cannot support it."
Ellsworth is a member of the Pro-Life Caucus in the House and has a 100% pro-life voting record on abortion issues.
Constituents can read the Affordable Health Care for America Act in its entirety at the 8th District Online Office.
