Crackpot Candidate #1: Cris Ericson, Candidate for Governor of Vermont... and more!
Special Reports: Crackpot Candidates
Our semi-irregular peek at turbid warblings from the deep end of the candidate fringe.
Welcome to the inaugural post in our new blog section subtly entitled Crackpot Candidates. This is the place where we'll be posting derisive commentary on the seemingly limitless numbers of somewhat, shall we say, unusual individuals who strive toward the lofty post of elected office, and their often striking political platform planks.
First off, the "grass-roots" campaign of a single-issue candidate who is not content to seek merely one elected office at a time, but two: Cris Ericson, the "US Marijuana Party 08" candidate from Vermont for, according to her website, Governor of Vermont and "U.S. Congress for Vermont". Wow! You go, girl! Girl? Damn, she seems to be asleep again.
The campaign site, done in a daring lime green on mandarin orange background that has our retinas squealing in pain, offers a rambling, poetically incoherent monologue ranging from seeming endorsements of various retailers of "TINY SPY EQUIPMENT" to a demand that "hypocrites who smoke killer cigarettes" should no longer be allowed to prevent adults from buying, growing, and selling marijuana, the bastards. We're pretty sure the entire site was cobbled together in a hempy haze and then immediately forgotten by the candidate, who we believe was last seen inspecting her cuticles in search of tiny universes.
Weed legalization is probably the world's most important issue at the moment, no doubt, and one with which Ms. Ericson has achieved considerably greater electoral success than in the case of her previous world's most important single-issue stance in 2006: Something about Water Quality.
From the campaign HQ:
"Cris Ericson appeared on the
Official Election Ballot in Vermont in 2002
Make Marijuana Legal Party for Governor
and came in 4th out of ten candidates.
2004 Cris Ericson Marijuana Party for Governor
came in 3rd out of 6 candidates
and also in 2004
Cris Ericson Marijuana Party for U.S. Senate
came in 3rd out of 6 candidates.
2006 Republican Primary, Cris Ericson came in 3rd for U.S. Senate.
In the 2006 General Election as an Independent candidate with
Water Quality as her focus issue,
Cris Ericson received far fewer votes with the water quality issue
than in 2004 and 2002 with a marijuana legalization issue."
Kudos, Cris! For 2010, we recommend human-animal hybrids. George W. Bush mentioned them in his State of the Union, but have we seen any legislative action from our do-nothing Congress yet? I think we all know the answer to that one (stamp your hooves if you agree). They must be stopped, and Cris Ericson is the person to do it!
