Change to Win Statement On Introduction of Employee Free Choice Act
March 10, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – Change to Win chair Anna Burger issued the following statement in response to Rep. George Miller’s, D-Calif., and Sen. Tom Harkin’s, D-Iowa, introduction of the Employee Free Choice Act today in the United States Congress.
“The Employee Free Choice Act is a key part of a larger economic plan. It is vital to restoring our economy and putting workers back on a path of prosperity. Right now, millions of working families are struggling -- losing their jobs, their health care, and their retirement benefits. They’re working harder than ever before, yet they’re not able to share in the wealth they helped create. To really fix this economy, we must rebuild the middle class. The solution is simple: create good jobs that support a family so workers can again buy homes, cars and the necessities for their families -- and put money back into our economy.
“Hundreds of workers from across the country have come to our nation’s capitol today to lobby their Members of Congress and share their stories of why this bill is so essential to helping working families achieve the American Dream. Recent polling has shown that 73 percent of the public supports the Employee Free Choice Act. President Obama, Vice President Biden, Secretary Solis and majorities in both houses of Congress have stated their support for this bill. And millions of workers from coast-to-coast have launched a grassroots movement to make it easier for workers to join a union.
“We strongly urge are elected officials to swiftly pass this legislation and help restore our economy, rebuild the middle class, and renew the American Dream for America’s workers.”
