Sen. Hagan Announces $400 Million Investment For Smart Energy Grid
Progress Energy And Duke Energy Receive Recovery Act
October 27, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) today announced a major federal grant for Raleigh-based Progress Energy and Charlotte-based Duke Energy to build a smart energy grid that will deliver energy to costumers more efficiently. Progress and Duke Energy will receive $200 million each as part of a nationwide investment of more than $3 billion to spur the transition to a smart energy grid. Duke Energy Announces Distributed Generation Solar Sites
October 13, 2009 -- CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Four sites have been selected to have solar energy systems installed on their rooftops as part of the first phase of Duke Energy’s distributed solar generation program in North Carolina.
Duke Energy has selected large nonresidential customer sites for this first phase. They are:
* National Gypsum Company in Mount Holly, N.C., will house a 1.2-megawatt system which includes 5,096 rooftop solar panels.
* Highwood Properties in Greensboro, N.C., will house a 1.6-megawatt system which includes 7,020 rooftop solar panels.
* Food Lion, in Salisbury, N.C., will house a 1,292-kilowatt (1.3-megawatt) system which includes 5,616 rooftop solar panels. » read more »
UNC and Duke Energy sign contract to develop coastal wind pilot project
October 6, 2009 -- CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- In a pilot project designed to harness the power of the ocean breezes along North Carolina’s coast, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke Energy announced they have signed a contract to place up to three demonstration wind turbines in the Pamlico Sound.
The pilot project builds on a nine-month study completed in June 2009 by UNC for the N.C. General Assembly which found “North Carolina is well positioned to develop utility-scale wind energy production.” » read more »
Duke Energy grows its wind power business
July 6, 2009 -- CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Energy added to its growing portfolio of renewable power assets today with the announcement that it is building a new wind energy project in eastern Colorado and has closed its acquisition of a Pennsylvania wind farm.
Duke Energy will develop the 51-megawatt (MW) Kit Carson Windpower Project on approximately 6,000 acres of land under long-term lease near Burlington, Colo. The project will be the company’s first in the state and fourth in the region. » read more »
Duke Energy Kentucky seeks 18% natural gas rate hike
Natural gas delivery rate change to be effective in 2010
July 1, 2009 -- CINCINNATI -- Duke Energy Kentucky announced today it has filed a request with the Kentucky Public Service Commission seeking a rate increase for natural gas delivery service of approximately $17.5 million, or 14 percent on total gas revenues, to be effective in early 2010.
For an average residential customer using 70 ccf (ccf is 100 cubic feet, the standard unit of measure) of natural gas per month, the monthly bill will increase 17.9 percent, from $75.15 to $88.59, based on Duke Energy Kentucky's current rates for delivery. » read more »
Duke Energy raises quarterly dividend slightly
June 23, 2009 -- CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Energy has declared a quarterly cash dividend on its common stock of $0.24 per share, an increase of $0.01 over the previous level. The dividend is payable on Sept. 16, 2009, to shareholders of record on the close of business Aug. 14, 2009.
"Despite challenging economic conditions, Duke Energy continues to successfully implement its business strategy. We are pleased to share this success with our investors," said James E. Rogers, chairman, president and CEO.
This is the 83rd consecutive year that Duke Energy has paid a quarterly cash dividend on its common stock.

Duke Energy Tests Solar Panels, Smart Grid in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - June 16, 2009 -- An array of 213 solar panels will soon provide electricity to homes served by Duke Energy's McAlpine Creek substation in south Charlotte – all part of an effort to implement new smart grid technology.
The substation's new solar panels will provide approximately 50 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power five homes when the panels are operating. Electricity from these panels can be sent directly into the distribution lines serving the McAlpine Creek test area or used to charge a 500-kilowatt storage battery planned for installation at the substation in the weeks ahead. » read more »

Duke Energy Reaches Agreement on Indiana Electric Grid Modernization
June 8, 2009 -- PLAINFIELD, IND. -- Duke Energy has reached a settlement agreement with the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor and key consumer groups on a proposal to begin modernizing its electric grid to create an intelligent power delivery system.
The initiative -- called "smart grid" -- would employ advanced digital technology to save energy, improve the reliability of the power delivery system, improve customer service and reduce the impact on the environment.

Duke Energy Carolinas Asks for 12.6% Rate Increase in North Carolina
June 2, 2009 -- CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Energy Carolinas has filed a request with the North Carolina Utilities Commission to increase its North Carolina customer rates by approximately 12.6 percent.
If approved, the general rate changes are expected to be implemented no earlier than Jan. 1, 2010.
“Customers count on us to provide power that is affordable, reliable and clean. Judge Orders Duke Energy Power Plant Shutdowns on Wabash River
May 29, 2009 -- PLAINFIELD, IND. -- Judge Larry McKinney today issued a ruling in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana calling for Duke Energy to shut down three units at the company’s West Terre Haute Wabash River Station no later than Sept. 30, 2009.
The majority of the plant’s capacity is unaffected by the ruling, which calls for units 2, 3 and 5 to be retired, while the remaining Duke Energy-owned units at the station – 4 and 6 – will be unaffected. Shutting down units 2, 3 and 5 will remove a combined capacity of 265 megawatts, which is 39 percent of the station’s 677- megawatt power generating capacity. » read more »
Duke Energy Invests in "GreenTrees" to Generate Carbon Offsets Through the Planting of 1 Million Trees
May 28, 2009 -- CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Energy announced it is the lead investor in "GreenTrees," a program that aims to reforest 1 million acres in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley. The program is expected to generate high-quality, verifiable carbon offsets that Duke Energy believes will help reduce the overall cost of compliance with federal climate change legislation.
GreenTrees seeks to transform open and marginal farmland in this seven-state region into a sustainable ecosystem that captures large quantities of carbon dioxide, creates habitat for wildlife, and benefits landowners who commit to the long-term reforestation of their property.
