January 26, 2010 -- Failure to control America's growing national debt endangers the nation's economic recovery and the family budgets of average Americans, U.S. Senator Mark Begich said today in a Senate floor speech supporting a national debt commission.
Begich also endorsed President Obama's proposal to freeze some federal spending for three years, which would cut an estimated $250 billion from the national deficit over the next decade. » read more »
Sen. Begich Supports Effort to End TARP
Measure would have barred Treasury from releasing further funds
January 21, 2010 -- U.S. Senator Mark Begich today joined Republicans and Democrats in an effort to end the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). Begich voted for an amendment from Sen. John Thune (R - South Dakota) that would have barred the Treasury Department from releasing any remaining funds from the $700 billion bailout of banks, automakers and financial firms formulated under the Bush Administration.
The amendment to a bill that would raise the debt ceiling to $14.3 trillion required 60 votes to pass. It failed by a vote of 53 to 45. Begich was one of 12 Democrats who supported the amendment, which would have mandated all returned TARP funds be used to lower the national debt. » read more »

Military members, families and retirees benefit from program
December 16, 2009 -- U.S. Senator Mark Begich today applauded a decision by the TRICARE Management Agency (TMA) to extend for another year a health care rate reimbursement demonstration program in Alaska that benefits military members, their families and retirees.
In order to improve access for TRICARE beneficiaries in Alaska, three years ago TMA implemented a demonstration program allowing the agency to reimburse civilian doctors at a rate 1.35 times the current MEDICARE allowable rates. TMA estimates civilian provider participation in the TRICARE program has increased by 57 percent since the demonstration program began. » read more »

December 14, 2009 -- From millions of dollars worth of improvements to Alaska fisheries management to expansion of military facilities to support Alaska-based servicemen and women, U.S. Senator Mark Begich today supported final passage of the Omnibus Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2010.
The $446.8 billion bill passed the Senate today by a vote of 57 - 35 and now goes to the President's desk for final approval.

Sen. Begich on Chukchi Exploration Plan
December 7, 2009 -- U.S. Senator Mark Begich today welcomed approval by the Minerals Management Service (MMS) of Shell Inc.'s exploration plan for oil and gas leases in the Chukchi Sea.
"This is another positive step for Alaska's oil and gas industry. While challenges remain, approval of this exploration plan demonstrates Alaska will continue to play an important role in helping meet America's energy needs."
Approval of the exploration plan is a major hurdle in the exploration process. Shell still needs to obtain air permits from the Environmental Protection Agency and other administrative approvals before it can drill exploratory wells, currently planned for next summer. » read more »

Bill requires wireless phone companies to pro-rate Early Termination Fees and provides more transparency on customers’ bills
December 3, 2009 -- Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (MN), Senator Russ Feingold (WI), Senator Jim Webb (VA), and Senator Mark Begich (AK) introduced the Cell Phone Early Termination Fee, Transparency and Fairness Act. The legislation follows Verizon Wireless' decision to double their Early Termination Fees from $175 to $350 for certain subscribers who end their contracts early.
The bill would set limits on Early Termination Fees (ETFs). It would also require wireless providers to pro-rate ETFs and clearly notify customers about the fee, not only at the time of purchase, but for the duration of their contracts. » read more »
