Governor Riley to Attend Groundbreakings on Friday

March 05, 2008 -- CHAMBERS COUNTY- The good news on Alabama’s economic development continues Friday in rural Chambers County, where Alabama Governor Bob Riley and other leaders will break ground on two Kia suppliers that will bring 700 new jobs to the area.

March 04, 2008 -- MONTGOMERY - Alabama Governor Bob Riley is urging the Senate to pass legislation that creates an independent commission to oversee the Alabama Department of Transportation.

“This is the best way I know to make sure that transportation priorities always come before Montgomery politics,” Governor Riley said. “For years, governors would use the promise of asphalt to get legislators’ votes. Reports No Significant Voter Problems In Alabama During Super Tuesday

March 03, 2008 -- MONTGOMERY -- Alabama Governor Bob Riley is telling a federal judge today that Alabama had no significant problems with its new voter registration system during last month’s presidential primaries and he wants to relinquish his court-appointed responsibility for the system and turn it back over to the Secretary of State.    » read more »

February 12, 2008 -- MONTGOMERY - Alabama Governor Bob Riley said he wants the Legislature to pass a bill this week that eliminates state income taxes on the federal tax rebates that Alabamians will begin receiving in May.

“The Legislature can pass it and they should do it this week,” Governor Riley said.    » read more »

February 11, 2008 -- The Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will continue to support the states impacted by the severe storms and tornadoes.

FEMA is closely working with its state and local partners to assess damage and identify needs. Specialists from the agency are on site to support the response efforts already underway. Regional activities are as follow:

February 07, 2008 -- MONTGOMERY - Alabama Governor Bob Riley will seek a federal disaster declaration for areas of north Alabama hit by tornadoes on Wednesday. In addition, the Governor has declared a State of Emergency exists in Jackson, Lawrence and Walker counties.

Six deaths in Alabama have been attributed to the storms and dozens of homes have been destroyed or damaged. Local and state responders have been assessing damage and helping communities begin the recovery process.    » read more »

06 February 2008 -- In a display of natural fury unusual for this time of year, tornados and violent thunderstorms have killed at least 50 people in five south-central states.

Rescue crews are hard at work in a wide area hit by tornadoes overnight Tuesday. In Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky storms killed and injured people and damaged homes and places of business. In many areas power lines are down and streets are filled with debris.

One of the worst hit areas was Jackson, Tennessee, where local resident Michael Denny described what the storm's devastation.    » read more »
