Fort Lauderdale Attorney Pleads Guilty in Billion-Dollar Ponzi Scheme

January 27, 2010 -- MIAMI—Jeffrey H. Sloman, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; John V. Gillies, Special Agent in Charge, FBI, Miami Office; and Daniel W. Auer, Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Criminal Investigation Division, announced today that attorney Scott Rothstein, 47, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., entered a plea of guilty to a five-count information. Defendant Rothstein is scheduled for sentencing before the Honorable James I. Cohn on May 6, 2010. He faces a total maximum statutory term of 100 years in prison.    » read more »

January 28, 2010 -- Grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) will go toward the creation of a new high-speed rail corridor that connects Tampa Bay, Orlando, Miami and other communities in central and south Florida.

This region has experienced signicant population growth in recent decades, as well as increases in the volume of visitors, leading to strains on area roadways and airports. Currently, the region is almost entirely reliant on automobiles for transportation between these metro areas, which together have a population of over 10 million people and account for two of the nation’s 20 largest metro areas.

Florida Gov. Proposes $22.7 Billion Education Budget

Recommends increased K-12 per-student funding, higher teacher bonuses and flexibility in reducing class size

January 25, 2010 -- ST. PETERSBURG – Florida Governor Charlie Crist today highlighted his 2010-11 proposed budget for Pre K-12 education, recommending record level funding of $22.7 billion to continue learning gains achieved by Florida’s students during recent years.

Sen. Bill Nelson on Haiti Earthquake

January 15, 2010 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – With an untold number of injured children in Haiti and hospitals there damaged or destroyed, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson wants Florida’s children’s hospitals poised to receive the youngest of the earthquake victims.

In a letter today to the heads of 13 children’s hospitals in his home state, Nelson wrote to ask “for your support as we come together as a community to help the children of Haiti suffering from this unprecedented disaster.”

Florida Father-Son Investment Adviser Team Charged in Hedge Fund Fraud

Washington, D.C., Jan. 11, 2010 -- The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged two Sarasota, Fla.-based investment advisers with securities fraud for misleading investors about the financial condition of three hedge funds they managed, and misrepresenting that they controlled the funds' investment and trading activities when in fact they were being handled by Arthur G. Nadel.

The SEC alleges that Neil V. Moody and his son, Christopher D. Moody, distributed offering materials, account statements, and newsletters to investors that misrepresented the hedge funds' historical investment returns and overstated their asset values by as much as $160 million.    » read more »
