01/15/2008 -- At a news conference earlier today, it was announced that the Atlanta Braves AAA team will move from Richmond, Virginia to Gwinnett County, Georgia beginning in 2009. The announcement was made after the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners unanimous vote.
"We have known that Gwinnett County was interested in building a baseball stadium for about a year coupled with the fact that we have had some challenges getting a new AAA ballpark built in Richmond, made this attractive to have them in our backyard," said Terry McGuirk, Atlanta Braves Chairman and CEO. » read more »

Georgia Governor Perdue Announces Water Conservation Goals Met and Exceeded
Permit Holders Exceed 10% Goal; Nearly 350 Million Gallons Conserved Daily
December 18, 2007 -- ATLANTA – Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that citizens in 61 drought-stricken Georgia counties reduced their overall water withdrawals by more than 10 percent in November, surpassing the Governor’s goal for water conservation. According to EPD officials, water permit holders as a group conserved approximately 15 percent over last year’s water consumption levels. DoD Identifies Army Casualty: Staff Sgt. Gregory L. Elam, 39, of Columbus, Georgia
December 13, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Staff Sgt. Gregory L. Elam, 39, of Columbus, Georgia, died Dec. 11 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, as a result of a non-combat related illness.
He was assigned to the 54th Quartermaster Company, 49th Quartermaster Group, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), located at Fort Lee, Va.
This death is under investigation.

Georgia Governor Perdue Announces Strategy for Modernizing State's IT Infrastructure
December 11, 2007 -- ATLANTA – Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue announced today a plan to transform state government’s information technology infrastructure. The plan will strengthen the state’s operations by consolidating IT functions, with the Georgia Technology Authority managing private sector contracts to keep the state’s infrastructure updated and secure.
“I am taking action now to bring about an integrated IT infrastructure that is secure, stable and well-governed,” Governor Perdue said. “Maintaining the status quo is not an option.” » read more »
