May 12, 2009 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that the Department of Public Health has confirmed 5 new cases of novel H1N1 flu (swine flu) among Connecticut residents.

One of the positive results for H1N1 flu was confirmed today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the other four were confirmed today by the department’s Public Health Laboratory. The confirmed cases are residents of Darien, Greenwich, Pawcatuck, and Fairfield.    » read more »

Strengthening Communities Fund is Supported by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

May 11, 2009 -- The Department of Health and Human Services today announced the availability of grants worth $50 million from the Strengthening Communities Fund, a new fund created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The fund will strengthen nonprofit and faith-based organizations that aid families and communities who are struggling in the economic downturn.

The Strengthening Communities Fund (SCF) is divided into two parts. The Nonprofit Capacity Building program will make one-time, two-year awards of up to $1 million to lead organizations that will use the funds to support other faith-based or secular nonprofit organizations.    » read more »

11 May 2009 -- An early look at the H1N1 flu outbreak suggests that the World Health Organization was justified in its 29 April decision to raise the global pandemic alert level to phase 5, out of a possible 6.

"The new research, posted Monday 11 May on the Science Express Web site, indicates that the H1N1 virus is more easily transmitted than seasonal flu, and appears to be transmissible at levels comparable to lower estimates for previous flu pandemics.

"Our early analysis would suggest this is going to be an outbreak comparable to that of 20th century pandemics regarding the extent of its spread—it's very difficult to quantify the

human health impact at this stage, however," said study author Neil Ferguson of Imperial College London.    » read more »

Louisiana total rises to 20

May 11, 2009 -- BATON ROUGE -- Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals officials announced today that 11 more of the state’s probable cases of H1N1 influenza (swine flu) have been confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This increases the state’s total confirmed case count from nine to 20. The state’s total probable case count now stands at 29, which includes the addition of seven new probable cases: one from Jefferson Parish, three from Plaquemines Parish, two from St. Charles Parish and one from Vermillion Parish. These seven new probable cases had onset of illness on or before May 2 and are currently being investigated by state epidemiologists.    » read more »

Positive results for H1N1 flu were received today by the Department of Public Health for residents of Hartford, Ridgefield, and Stamford. These confirmation results were for probable cases previously identified by the state Public Health Laboratory and sent to the CDC for confirmation testing. All Cases Mild; Individuals Have or Are Recovering

May 8, 2009 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed ten new cases of novel H1N1 flu (swine flu) among Connecticut residents.

Positive confirmation results for H1N1 flu were received by the Department of Public Health from the CDC for six Fairfield residents as well as residents of North Granby, Wethersfield and Glastonbury. A case was also received from the Public Health Laboratory in Massachusetts, which conducted the confirmation test on a Manchester resident who was treated in that state. All of the individuals are recovering and did not require hospitalization.    » read more »

May 7, 2009 -- AUGUSTA – Maine’s first probable H1N1 case requiring hospitalization was identified late Thursday afternoon.

Dr. Dora Anne Mills of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said the patient is a young adult from Cumberland County with underlying chronic illness and is one of two newly identified H1N1 patients in Maine, the other being a student who attends Bridgton Academy.    » read more »

May 7, 2009 -- DES MOINES – Iowa Governor Chet Culver today sent the following letter to China’s Ambassador to the United States Zhou Wenzhong calling on Chinese Officials to allow for the importation of Iowa pork. The letter comes one day after China announced that it would no longer accept pork exports from Iowa over concerns of H1N1 influenza, though health officials both in the United States and across the globe have repeatedly said that eating pork is safe, and that one cannot contract the H1N1 virus from meat.

PHOENIX – (May 7, 2009) The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) and Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) learned today that The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 15 additional cases of the H1N1\Swine Flu in Maricopa County bringing the county total to 35.

With the State Laboratory beginning to process lab samples in addition to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, we still anticipate seeing additional cases of H1N1\Swine Flu and Seasonal Flu throughout Maricopa County. May 6, 2009 -- Washington, D.C. -- Secretary Napolitano: Good afternoon. Let me begin by saying this is the last day we plan to hold a daily briefing on the H1N1 flu situation. We will have briefings on an as-needed basis as new details warrant. So today I want to talk about where we are and then where we are going.

The CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] has confirmed 642 cases of H1N1 flu in 41 states. Additionally, CDC has begun reporting probable cases as well, which now stand at 845 in 42 states. Sadly, we also learned of the second death in the United States from H1N1 flu.
