Maine Governor Announces Enhanced Recovery Act Web Site

March 6, 2009 -- AUGUSTA - Maine Governor John E. Baldacci today unveiled an improved version of the State Web page dedicated to the federal Recovery Act. Through the enhanced site, http://www.MaineRecovery.gov, Mainers can access up-to-date information about where and how federal recovery funds are dispersed.

“Maine people expect and deserve access on the impact of the Recovery Act,” said Governor Baldacci. “This improved Web page provides clear information about how the funds will be spent in a user-friendly format.”

The original Web page was launched on Feb. 4 as a clearinghouse of information and resources for tracking the federal Recovery Act’s progress in Congress and actions taken by State government related to the Recovery Act.    » read more »

Cyber Used Vehicle Scammers Claim U.S. Military Connections

March 5, 2009 -- The FBI continues to receive reports of individuals victimized while attempting to purchase vehicles via the Internet. Victims find attractively priced vehicles advertised at different Internet classified ad sites. Most of the scams include some type of third-party vehicle protection program to ensure a safe transaction. After receiving convincing e-mails from the phony vehicle protection program, the victims are directed to send either the full payment, or a percentage of the payment, to the third-party agent via a wire payment service. Feb. 27, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – A real estate developer should not be allowed to unmask people who criticized him anonymously on an Internet forum because his original defamation complaint did not name the “John Does” as defendants and, now, the statute of limitations has expired, a Maryland appellate court ruled today.

State of Alabama Launches Federal Stimulus Website

February 27, 2009 -- MONTGOMERY - Alabama Governor Bob Riley on Friday launched a website that will help Alabamians learn more about the federal stimulus law and track how the stimulus dollars are spent in the state.

The website is www.stimulus.alabama.gov. There, Alabamians will be able to find information on the amounts of stimulus funds coming to various programs.

The website will be updated to reflect new information on the stimulus law as federal agencies issue specific regulations on funding uses and requirements. It will also soon include a feature that will allow organizations and individuals to submit proposals for use of the stimulus funds. Alabama Governor Riley Signs Executive Order Putting State “Checkbook” Online for First Time Ever

February 11, 2009 -- BIRMINGHAM - Taxpayers will be able to see where every dime of state money goes under an executive order Alabama Governor Bob Riley signed today.

The directive orders the creation of a publicly accessible website that details all spending, grants and contracts done by state government. The public information will include the amount of funds being spent, the date of the expenditure, the agency spending the money and the funding source.

“Taxpayers will know where their money goes and to whom it goes," said Governor Riley.

Governor Riley signed the executive order during the annual meeting of the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama (PARCA), where he delivered remarks on the need for ethics reform and more accountability in state government.    » read more »
