DoD Identifies Air Force Casualty: Tech. Sgt. William H. Jefferson, Jr., 34, of Norfolk, Virginia

March 23, 2008 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of an Airman who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Tech. Sgt. William H. Jefferson, Jr., 34, of Norfolk, Virginia, died March 22 near Sperwan Ghar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to the 21st Special Tactics Squadron, Pope Air Force Base, N.C.

March 19, 2008 -- Washington, D.C. — More than 10 people die each week in Virginia because they don’t have health insurance, says a new report by Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers.

The Families USA report, the first-ever state-specific report of this type, is based on a groundbreaking national study by the Institute of Medicine, which in 2002 forged the direct link between a lack of health coverage and deaths from health-related causes.    » read more »

DoD Identifies Two Army Casualties: Staff Sgt. Michael D. Elledge, 41 and Spc. Christopher C. Simpson, 23

March 19, 2008 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

They died Mar. 17 in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device during combat operations.

They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Michael D. Elledge, 41, of Brownsburg, Indiana

Spc. Christopher C. Simpson, 23, of Hampton, Virginia

Virginia Governor Kaine Declares Statewide Emergency to Coordinate Response to Severe Weather

March 5, 2008 -- RICHMOND – Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine today declared a state of emergency in the Commonwealth of Virginia, directing state agencies to take all necessary actions to aid in the response to severe weather that affected several areas last night.

March 3, 2008 -- RICHMOND – Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that Virginia again received the top score in the Government Performance Project’s “Grading the States 2008” report, the nation’s only comprehensive, independent analysis of how well each state performs in serving the public. In the first such rating in three years, Virginia achieved an overall grade of A- for performance. Justice Department Settles Discrimination Lawsuit Against Virginia Beach Nightclub Owner

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2008, WASHINGTON – The Department of Justice today reached a settlement resolving allegations of racial discrimination with the owner and operator of Kokoamos’ Island Bar & Grill (“Kokoamos”), a restaurant and nightclub in Virginia Beach, Va. The Justice Department alleged that the nightclub discriminated against African-American patrons by denying them admission into the facility for discriminatory reasons. The settlement requires the nightclub to implement changes to its policies and practices in order to prevent such discrimination.    » read more »
