Pew Report Finds Deceptive Credit Card Practices Remain Widespread

Washington, DC - 10/28/2009 - One hundred percent of credit cards offered online by the leading bank card issuers continue to include practices that will be outlawed once legislation passed in May takes effect next year, according to a new report by the Pew Health Group’s Safe Credit Cards Project. The report also found that advertised credit card interest rates rose an average of 20 percent in the first two quarters of 2009, even as banks’ cost of lending declined.

With the Federal Reserve currently developing rules to ensure penalty charges are “reasonable and proportional” as required under the Credit CARD Act, the report also includes policy recommendations for regulators.    » read more »

Sen. Begich Slams New Anti-Health Reform Ad Campaign

“60-Plus” campaign full of false information, scare tactics

October 30, 2009 -- U.S. Senator Mark Begich today slammed a new television ad campaign running in Alaska and several other states as just another attempt by those trying to defeat health reform by using false information and scare tactics to mislead the public.

The television ads from the 60 Plus Association are falsely telling viewers that Sen. Begich supports health care legislation that includes massive cuts to Medicare and will harm seniors.

"This is an outrageous attempt to scare and mislead seniors on the topic of health insurance reform" Begich said. "None of the health care reform proposals being considered by the Senate would cut Medicare benefits."    » read more »

Sierra Club Ads Get Dirtier; Still Not As Dirty As Coal

October 14, 2009 -- Washington, DC - The Sierra Club, with the Sierra Student Coalition today launched the second in its series of online video ads, part of its nationwide campaign to kick coal off campuses. With organizers on the ground in several of the more than 60 campuses with on-site coal plants, the Campaign is working to transition schools to 100% clean energy.

Bill to Prevent Loud TV Ads Passes Subcommittee

CT Gov. signs bill regulating credit card marketing to college students

July 8, 2009 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced she has signed a bill that regulates credit card marketing on campus to college students and restricts debt collection actions that can be taken by credit card companies against parents.

“Students are already burdened with education loans by the time they leave college. Nielsen Shows Big Drop in US Advertising Spending

U.S. Ad Spending Fell 12% in the First Quarter, Nielsen Reports

NEW YORK, NY June 8, 2009 – The Nielsen Company reported today that U.S. advertising for the first quarter 2009 was down 12% compared to the first quarter 2008. Preliminary figures show that U.S. ad expenditures declined $3.8 billion to a total spend of $27.9 billion in the first quarter.

All measured media showed negative growth in this difficult economy, ranging from Spanish-Language Cable TV (-1.1%) to Local Sunday Supplements (-37.7%).
