Failed, Weak States Threaten Global Security

07 April 2008 --Failed and weak states are unable for various reasons to provide security and other basic services for their citizens. The Bush administration and a growing number of foreign policy experts say failed states pose a threat to world peace and security. But there are critics who argue that intervening in a failed state can do more harm than good.

Gul Khan was just a boy when his family left its village near Jalalabad to escape the war in Afghanistan. For more than 30 years, he lived in Pakistan because he says it was too dangerous to return. Today he is coming home.

"I am asking my brothers and villagers to come back to this village and this lovely country. If they come back, we can rebuild," he said.    » read more »

March 24, 2008 -- The Department of Defense today announced the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Staff Sgt. William R. Neil Jr., 38, of Holmdel, New Jersey, died March 21 in Sperwan Ghar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, N.C.

March 23, 2008 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of an Airman who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Tech. Sgt. William H. Jefferson, Jr., 34, of Norfolk, Virginia, died March 22 near Sperwan Ghar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to the 21st Special Tactics Squadron, Pope Air Force Base, N.C.

March 15, 2008 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Staff Sgt.Collin J. Bowen, 38, of Millersville, Maryland, died March 14 at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of wounds suffered Jan. 2 in Khowst Province, Afghanistan, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment, Maryland Army National Guard, Towson, Md.

Sgt. Gabriel Guzman, 25, of Hornbrook, California, died March 8 at Orgun E, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device in Gholam Haydar Kala, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
