Washington, D.C. -- November 4, 2009 -- Today, Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) commented on the passage of the Worker, Homeownership and Business Assistance Act. The bill provides 14 weeks of additional Federal-State Unemployment Insurance Program (UI) benefits to all states. In addition, it provides another six weeks of benefits to recipients in states such as Pennsylvania where unemployment exceeds 8.5 percent. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. » read more »

November 5, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a speech on the Senate floor today, Senator Ted Kaufman continued his push for more regulatory oversight of the U.S. equity markets by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). As Kaufman noted, “just over one year since the collapse of Lehman Brothers ... Wall Street is essentially unchanged.” Not only are the same practices that led to the financial debacle 14 months ago still present, but the market is increasingly dominated by “new practices which are leading to new problems and new systemic risks.”

Nov. 5, 2009 -- CHARLESTON, W.Va.— West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin today reminded West Virginians that the last day to take advantage of the State’s second ENERGY STAR® Sales Tax Holiday is Nov. 30, 2009.
Since Sept. 1, West Virginians will not have to pay sales and use tax on certain ENERGY STAR® qualified products valued at $5,000 or less. Tangible personal property for use in a trade or business is not subject to this sales tax holiday. » read more »

Alabama Reports More than 3,600 Supplier Jobs Due to Kia

MONTGOMERY - Alabama is reaping rewards from Kia’s decision to build its first U.S. assembly plant just a few miles across the state line in Georgia.
The Alabama Development Office reports Kia is responsible for more than 3,600 new jobs at automotive supplier plants located in Alabama. Those workers are employed at 34 different plants in Alabama, including 12 new suppliers that located in the state since Kia announced its decision in March 2006.
Twenty-five of those 34 plants supply both Alabama’s Hyundai plant and the Kia plant in Georgia. » read more »

Work will be performed at worldwide locations and is expected to be completed Oct. 31, 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. Washington, D.C. (Nov. 3) -- The Sierra Club and the United Steelworkers (USW) today voiced concerns over a decision by regulators to grant special exemptions for pulp and paper from the Lacey Act reforms of 2008.
These landmark reforms aim to protect the world’s forests and communities by halting the import and sale of illegally-sourced wood products in the U.S. Under the Lacey Act reforms importers must declare the country and harvest of origin for their products, an essential step to creating transparency in a previously unregulated market where US demand was driving deforestation around the world.

Small Businesses Benefit from Berkeley Lab’s Recovery Act Funds
Funds also create jobs at the Lab, at small businesses and down the chain.
October 28, 2009 -- As funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act start to flow into Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, much of that funding is flowing out to small businesses.
To date, Berkeley Lab has been awarded more than $220 million in Recovery Act funds, a large part of which will go toward infrastructure projects and buying and upgrading computers and scientific equipment, such as microscopes, lasers and gene sequencers. So far, $38.2 million in Recovery Act subcontracts have been awarded, of which 58 percent went to small businesses. That far exceeds the federal government’s goal for the Recovery Act of giving 23 percent of prime contracts to small firms. » read more »
U.S. Wind Energy Industry Installs Over 1,600 Mw In Third Quarter

October 20, 2009 -- Washington D.C. — The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) reported today in its third quarter (Q3) market report that the U.S. wind energy industry installed 1,649 megawatts (MW) of new power generating capacity in the third quarter—an amount higher than either the 2nd quarter of 2009 or the 3rd quarter of 2008—bringing the total capacity added this year to date to over 5,800 MW. AWEA also reported that wind turbine manufacturing still lags below 2008 levels, in both production and new announcements. » read more »
