March 11, 2010 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. - With today's release of new trade deficit figures showing an $18.3 billion increase last month in our trade deficit with China, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today wrote to U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner urging him to designate China as a currency manipulator. USW: Commerce Dept. Finds China, Indonesia Improperly Subsidize Coated Paper Producers

Washington, DC – Appleton Coated LLC, NewPage Corporation, and Sappi Fine Paper North America – together with the United Steelworkers (USW) -- commended the U.S. Department of Commerce for its preliminary countervailing duty determinations against subsidized coated paper imports from China and Indonesia.

As a result of these determinations, the Department of Commerce will impose tariffs on imports of coated paper to offset the unfair advantage provided by subsidization. The Department of Commerce found that Chinese coated paper was subsidized by an average rate of 8.38 percent.    » read more »

Rep. Nye on Chinese Drywall Victims

01/15/10 -- Washington, DC - Congressman Glenn Nye (VA-02) has long been a strong advocate for aiding families affected by toxic Chinese drywall, and now he will be leading that fight in Washington – as the new Co-Chairman of the Congressional Contaminated Drywall Caucus.

Nye took over the job this week, and he immediately made it clear that he would not accept the same delays and inaction that characterized the federal response to toxic Chinese drywall last year. On Wednesday, Nye sent a letter to the heads of the federal agencies working to investigate the situation, stating that “families struggling with toxic Chinese drywall have waited long enough.” The letter was also signed by Nye's co-chairman on the bipartisan caucus, Florida Republican Mario Diaz-Balart.    » read more »

Census Bureau: India to Become Most Populous Country in 2025

Dec. 15, 2009 -- China’s population is projected to peak at slightly less than 1.4 billion in 2026, both earlier and at a lower level than previously projected. Meanwhile, India’s population is projected to surpass China’s population in 2025, according to new data being released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

These figures come from the population estimates and projections for 227 countries and areas released today through the Census Bureau’s International Data Base. This release includes revisions for 21 countries, including China.    » read more »

Feds close to making decision on tainted drywall

December 11, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – A U.S. senator said today the federal government’s close to resolving the question of help for people whose homes are contaminated with imported drywall. Florida Democrat Bill Nelson said he’s basing that assessment on a letter he received just this week from the country’s top housing official.

In the Dec. 7 letter to Nelson, U.S. Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) Secretary Shaun Donovan says his agency soon will let communities and homeowners know how federal block grant monies can be used to help remediate homes with problem drywall.    » read more »

Toyota Presents Study-assistance Stipends in China

December 8, 2009 -- Tokyo -- Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces it presented stipends from the Toyota Study Assistance Fund today at a ceremony at Guizhou University in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China. This was the fourth annual presentation of stipends from the fund.
