West Virginia Governor Orders State And U.S. Flags To Be Lowered In Observance Of Memorial Day

May 22, 2009 -- CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Following a federal proclamation issued by President Barack Obama on May 22, West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin today issued a proclamation ordering all state flags, along with all United States flags, be displayed at half staff from dawn through noon Monday, May 25, 2009, in recognition of Memorial Day.

The governor also asked all West Virginians who have U.S. and state flags at their residence, to display the flags at half staff from dawn until noon on Monday. Also in conjunction with the Memorial Day recognition, citizens are also being asked to join in the nationwide Moment of Remembrance observance, beginning at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day.    » read more »

May 22, 2009 -- BISMARCK, N.D. - In accordance with a proclamation signed by the President, North Dakota Governor John Hoeven has proclaimed Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, a day of prayer in North Dakota, and has directed all government agencies to fly the American and North Dakota flags at half staff until noon on that day.

May 22, 2009 -- SANTA FE – New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has signed an executive order lowering flags to half staff in honor and mourning of one of the original Navajo Code Talkers, John Brown Jr., 88, who passed away at his home in Crystal, NM on Wednesday. 01/28/2009 -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement regarding the death of Private Grant A. Cotting of Corona:

“Private Grant Cotting was a courageous soldier who dedicated his life to serving his fellow Americans and protecting our country’s freedom. His sacrifice is an inspiration to us all and his bravery will forever be remembered. Maria and I join all Californians in offering our thoughts and prayers to Grant’s family and friends as they mourn this terrible loss.”

Cotting, 19, died January 24 in Kut, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. Cotting was assigned to the 515th Sapper Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, U.S. Army, Fort Leonard Wood, MO.    » read more »

New York Governor Paterson Directs Flags To Be Flown At Half-Staff

August 13, 2008 -- New York Governor David A. Paterson has directed that flags on state government buildings across New York be flown at half-staff on Friday, August 15, 2008, in honor of New York City resident Sergeant Jose Ulloa, who died August 9, 2008 in Baghdad, Iraq.

Sergeant Ulloa was a member of the 515th Transportation Company, 28th Transportation Battalion, based in Mannheim, Germany.

Cole, 34, died Aug. 2 in Bayji, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. Cole was assigned to the 426th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), U.S. Army, Fort Campbell, KY.

In honor of Pfc. Cole, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

Kentucky Governor Beshear Directs Flags to Remain at Half-Staff

June 16, 2008 -- FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings remain at half-staff in honor of a Fort Campbell soldier who died June 12 supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

According to the Department of Defense, Sgt. John D. Aragon, 22, of Antioch, Calif., died in Kadamiyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of the funeral, for which arrangements are pending.    » read more »
