Governor Mourns Death of Soldier from Maine

April 11, 2008 -- AUGUSTA – Maine Governor John E. Baldacci has learned of the death of an active duty Army soldier with Maine ties.

Spc. William Charles Koelsch III, died in on Wednesday, April 9, in a training accident at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He served with the 509th Infantry (Airborne).

Spc. Koelsch’s mother lives in Fort Fairfield. He also has a sister who lives in Maine.

“All of Maine mourns the death of another brave soldier,” Governor Baldacci said. “We will keep SPC Koelsch’s family and friends in our prayers during this difficult time.”

Flags will be ordered flown at half-staff on the day of Spc Koelsch’s funeral.

Kentucky Governor Beshear Directs Flags to Remain at Half-Staff In Honor of Soldier Killed In Iraq

April 11, 2008 -- FRANKFORT, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings remain at half-staff in honor of a Fort Campbell soldier who died April 9 supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

According to the Department of Defense, Specialist Jacob J. Fairbanks, 22, of Saint Paul, Minn., died in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of the funeral, for which arrangements are pending.    » read more »

Iowa Governor Orders Flags Lowered To Honor Fallen Soldier: Major Stuart Wolfer

April 11, 2008 -- (Des Moines) -- Iowa Governor Chet Culver ordered today that all flags in the state be flown at half staff on Monday, April 14, 2008, from 8 a.m. (CST) until sunset in honor of Maj. Stuart Wolfer, 36, who died on April 6, 2008 while serving in Iraq. Wolfer served in Des Moines from May 1994 through November 1996 with the Army Reserve's 19th Theatre Army Area Command of Fort Des Moines. Maine Governor Orders Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff on April 11

April 10, 2008 -- AUGUSTA – In remembrance and honor of Sgt. Nicholas A. Robertson, Maine Governor John E. Baldacci has directed that the United States flag and the State of Maine flag be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Friday, April 11, 2008.

Sgt. Robertson died as a result of wounds received in Afghanistan on April 2, 2008. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.

Services for Sgt. Robertson are being held on Friday in Brewer.

April 10, 2008 -- Des Moines -- Iowa Governor Chet Culver ordered that all flags in the state be flown at half staff today, April 10, 2008, from 8 a.m. (CST) until sunset in honor of Lance Cpl. Cody Wanken, 20, of Hampton who died on April 2, 2008.

The Governor's directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under the control of the state. H.R. 692, signed by President Bush in June 2007, requires federal government agencies in the state to comply with the Governor’s proclamation that the U.S. flag be flown at half-staff in the event of the death of a member of the Armed Forces.    » read more »

March 28, 2008 -- AUGUSTA – In remembrance and honor of Private First Class Tyler Jacob Smith, Maine Governor John E. Baldacci has directed that the United States flag and the State of Maine flag be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Monday, March 31, 2008.

PFC Smith died as a result of wounds received from indirect fire in Iraq on Friday, March 21, 2008.

His funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday at the West Parish Congregational Church, 10 Church Street in Bethel.
