Sen. Hagan Introduces Bill To Help Nonprofits Provide Affordable Housing

Legislation is Backed by Entire NC Delegation

March 11, 2010 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. -U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) this morning introduced a bill to give states the flexibility to exempt nonprofit housing organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity, from costly regulatory requirements. The Nonprofit Mortgage Licensing Clarification Act of 2010 is a companion to the House bill H.R. 4400, introduced by Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC). Both bills have bipartisan support, and every member of the N.C. Congressional Delegation has joined as a co-sponsor.    » read more »

Sen. Sanders Announces Seniors Housing Grant

March 5, 2010 -- BURLINGTON, Vt., March 5 – Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today announced that he secured a $380,000 federal grant for a Vergennes senior housing project.

The Vergennes project will fill a critically important need in Addison County and provide seniors in the region quality and affordable independent living space.

“We face a serious housing crisis in Vermont and throughout the country,” Sanders said. “The crisis is particularly acute for many of our seniors and people that are on fixed incomes,” he added.

The grant is in addition to $24,205 in federal support Sanders secured for the Vergennes Senior Center.    » read more »

January 26, 2010 -- WASHINGTON – Congressman Dennis Cardoza said today he had lost confidence in the top housing official in the Obama Administration, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan.

The three biggest cities in Congressman Cardoza’s district – Merced, Stockton, and Modesto – have the 3rd, 5th, and 6th highest foreclosure rates in the country, respectively. These cities also rank in the top 6 cities nationwide for unemployment rates.

“After personally coming to my community and pledging support to me and my constituents, HUD developed criteria to provide assistance that overlooked the region that needed the most help. The MRB withdrew the FHA approval of Strategic Mortgage Corporation (Strategic), ProMortgage Inc., and Americare Investment Group Inc. (doing business as Premier Capital Lending. Lautenberg and Menendez: $49 Million in ARRA Funding for Affordable Housing in New Jersey

January 19, 2010 -- NEWARK, N.J. – Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today announced the U.S. Department of the Treasury has awarded the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA) more than $49 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to finance the expansion and improvement of affordable housing in New Jersey.

The Recovery Act, which Lautenberg helped author as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, was signed into law by President Obama in February of 2009. Menendez is chairman of the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Housing.    » read more »

January 15, 2010 -- WASHINGTON - In an effort to stabilize home values and improve conditions in communities where foreclosure activity is high, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan today announced a temporary policy that will expand access to FHA mortgage insurance and allow for the quick resale of foreclosed properties.

The announcement is part of the Obama administration commitment to addressing foreclosure.
