26 August 2008 -- Tropical Storm Gustav has slightly weakened as it moves towards the Caribbean island nations of Jamaica and Cuba, but forecasters say it will grow stronger during the next few days.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Gustav is has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers an hour. Forecasters say the storm is heading northwest on a path that will take it between Jamaica and the southeastern coast of Cuba between Wednesday and Thursday.

Gustav is expected to regain hurricane strength today once it clears the southwestern peninsula of Haiti. Forecasters said late Tuesday it could become a Category Two storm on the scale that measures a hurricane's power and potential destructiveness.    » read more »

09 September 2007 -- Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell has broken his own world record in the 100 meters, running 9.74 seconds at the Rieti Grand Prix meet in Italy.

Asafa Powell's record time, in a qualifying heat, is 0.03 second faster than his previous best - the former world record time of 9.77 seconds, which he has run three times since 2005 , once in 2005 and twice in 2006.

Asafa Powell won the final at Rieti Sunday in 9.78 seconds, 0.05 second ahead of countryman Michael Frater.    » read more »

30 August 2007 Osaka, Japan (By David Byrd) -- American sprinter Tyson Gay has won his second gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan. As VOA's David Byrd reports, Gay added the 200-meters title to his 100-meters gold medal.

By the narrowest of margins Veronica Campbell walked away with the gold medal in a photo finish. In the end, both the Jamaican and defending champion Lauryn Williams of the United States were credited with the same time of 11.01 seconds.    » read more »
