What makes a great movie?

August 14, 2007 -- A film that wins critical acclaim is likely to be an R-rated drama, adapted from a prize-winning play or book and based on a true story, with the original author or director involved in writing the screenplay. It is unlikely to be a sequel or remake, a comedy or musical, a summer release, a big-budget project, have a PG-13 rating, open on numerous screens or do a big box office on the first weekend. It probably has an excellent score, but it may not have an award-winning song.

Italian Filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni Dies at 94

31 July 2007 (By VOA News) -- Italian film director Michelangelo Antonioni has died at the age of 94.

Antonioni died at his home Monday night. He is best known for the Oscar-nominated film, Blowup, and L'Aventura (The Adventure).

Antonioni made his major movies in the 1960s and 1970s, but his career spanned six decades.

Antonioni's 1975 work, The Passenger, starred Jack Nicholson.

Many of the director's films examined the subject of alienation in modern society.

Washington, 30 July 2007 (By Ray McDonald) -- A yellow man with bulging eyes and an insatiable appetite for donuts rules the U.S. box office. Homer Simpson and his cartoon clan pulled in $71.9 million over the weekend, propelling The Simpsons Movie to number one.

Oscar-Winning Swedish Film Director Ingmar Bergman Dies

30 July 2007 (By VOA News) -- Award-winning Swedish film and stage director Ingmar Bergman has died. He was 89.

Swedish media reports Monday quote his daughter, Eva, as saying Bergman died peacefully at his home on the Baltic island of Faro. He spent the last few years of his life there.

Bergman made more than 50 films, and he is considered one of the most influential directors of the 20th century. He is perhaps best known for the Oscar-winning Fanny and Alexander, and The Seventh Seal, which won prizes at the Cannes Film Festival.    » read more »
