USS George Washington Departs for Japan

4/7/2008 -- NORFOLK (NNS) -- The aircraft carrier USS George Washington (GW) (CVN 73) with its crew of approximately 3,200 Sailors departed Norfolk, April 7, to begin its journey to Yokosuka, Japan to replace USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) as the United States' only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier.

Navy to Christen The USNS Amelia Earhart

April 03, 2008 -- The Navy will launch and christen the USNS Amelia Earhart at a 9 p.m. PDT ceremony on April 6, 2008. The christening ceremony for the newest ship in the Lewis and Clark (T-AKE) class of underway replenishment ships will be held at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego.

Navy Introduces New PT Uniforms

4/2/2008 -- WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy introduced its new physical training uniform (PTU) to the world, in a photo shoot, March 20-21. The PTU consist of a gold shirt with reflective Navy lettering and blue shorts with Navy lettering and reflective markings. The new uniforms will be required for all group and unit physical training (PT) in the Navy, as well as the semi-annual physical fitness tests.

Secretary of the Navy visits Mumbai, New Delhi

4/1/2008 -- NEW DELHI (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Donald C. Winter, has wrapped up a tour in India with stops in Mumbai and New Delhi.

Winter's first stop on his three-day trip was India's Western Naval Command in the coastal city of Mumbai. The tour of the base gave Winter a detailed view of India's naval operations, including stops at a shipyard and tour of the naval destroyer, INS Delhi (Delhi class DDG). Winter also met with India's commander-in-chief, Vice Adm. Jagjit Singh Bedi.    » read more »

Lengthy, Repetitive Deployments Risk Forces, Navy Adm. Mike Mullen Says

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C., April 1, 2008 – The military has to reduce stress on the Army and Marine Corps or risk crossing “an invisible red line” that will place too much strain on the force, Navy Adm. Mike Mullen said during an interview here today.

Navy SEAL to Receive Medal of Honor Posthumously

3/31/2008 -- WASHINGTON (NNS) -- A Navy SEAL who sacrificed himself to save his teammates during combat operations in Iraq will be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush the White House announced March 31.

The parents of Master-At-Arms 2nd Class (SEAL) Michael A. Monsoor will accept the nation's highest military honor on behalf of their son during a White House ceremony April 8.

USS Nashville Visits Rota, Spain

Mar 18, 2008 -- ROTA, Spain — Sailors aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS Nashville (LPD 13) visited the port here March 3-6, while transiting through the U.S. Navy's 6th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR).

The Sailors enjoyed three days of liberty in the city, and also took the time to help the local community and improve international relations.

64 Universities to Receive $200 Million in Defense Dept. Research Funding

March 18, 2008 -- The Department of Defense announced today 34 awards to academic institutions to perform multi-disciplinary basic research. The total amount of the awards is expected to be $19.7 million in fiscal 2008 and $200 million over five years. Awards are subject to the successful completion of negotiations between the academic institutions and DoD research offices that will make the awards: the Army Research Office (ARO), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).    » read more »

Nimitz and Essex Strike Groups complete Expeditionary Strike Force training

3/17/2008 --- USS NIMITZ, At Sea (NNS) -- The Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (CSG) conducted an Expeditionary Strike Force (ESF) exercise with the Essex Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) March 14-16.

The ESF training brought together the two strike groups to test their ability to plan and conduct multitask operations across a broad spectrum of naval disciplines.

Navy Awards Contract for New Walter Reed Facility
