DoD Identifies Navy Casualty: Chief Petty Officer Mark T. Carter, 27, of Fallbrook, California

December 13, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of a sailor who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Chief Petty Officer Mark T. Carter, 27, of Fallbrook, California, died Dec. 11, as a result of enemy action while conducting combat operations in Iraq.

He was permanently assigned as an East Coast-based Navy SEAL.

December 12, 2007 -- The Navy will commission the newest San Antonio class amphibious transport dock ship Mesa Verde during an 11 a.m. EST ceremony Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, in Panama City, Fla.

The ship is named to honor the Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado. In 1906, Congress established Mesa Verde as the first cultural park in the National Park Systems. This is the first U.S. Navy ship to be named Mesa Verde.    » read more »

11/15/2007 -- USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea (NNS) -- The Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 12 concluded a three-day, multi-unit exercise Nov. 13 aimed at sharpening its anti-submarine warfare (ASW) skills.

Federal Appeals Court Limits Navy Sonar Exercises Off Southern California

Court Upholds Injunction to Protect Whales, Dolphins and other Marine Life

LOS ANGELES (November 13, 2007) – A federal appeals court today ordered the U.S. Navy not to use a dangerous form of high-intensity sonar in its future training exercises planned for the rich biological waters off Southern California until serious questions over likely harm to marine mammals can be resolved. High-intensity mid-frequency (MFA) sonar has killed marine mammals in numerous incidents around the world. November 06, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of a sailor who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Kevin R. Bewley, 27, of Hector, Arkansas, died Nov. 5 of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was conducting operations in Salah ad Din province, Iraq.

Bewley was permanently assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11, Oak Harbor, Wash.

Six US Soldiers Killed as 2007 Becomes Deadliest Year in Iraq for US Military

06 November 2007 -- The U.S. military has announced the deaths of five soldiers and one sailor in Iraq, making 2007 the deadliest year for the U.S. military in Iraq since the war started in 2003.

The deaths happened Monday. More than 850 U.S. military personnel have died in Iraq this year.

The U.S. military says four of the soldiers were killed in an explosion near their vehicle in Kirkuk, while the fifth solider died in combat operations in al Anbar. The sailor died from injuries sustained in an explosion in Salah ad Din province.    » read more »
