Navy Commissions New Guided Missile Destroyer Sampson

October 31, 2007 -- The Navy will commission the newest Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer, Sampson, Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, during an 11 a.m. EDT ceremony in Boston, Mass.

Vice Adm. William D. Sullivan, U.S. Military representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Military Committee will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Sampson’s great granddaughter Clara Parsons will serve as sponsor of the ship. In a time-honored Navy tradition, she will give the first order to "man our ship and bring her to life!"    » read more »

Former Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Laid to Rest at U.S. Naval Academy

10/31/2007 -- ANNAPOLIS, Md. (NNS) -- Former Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, retired Adm. William James Crowe Jr., was laid to rest with full military honors at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery Oct. 31.

Crowe, a graduate of the Naval Academy's Class of 1947, passed away Oct. 18 at the age of 82.    » read more »

DoD Identifies Navy Casualties: Seaman Anamarie Sannicolas Camacho, 20, and Seaman Genesia Mattril Gresham, 19

October 23, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of two sailors who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

They died Oct. 22 in Bahrain during a non-combat related incident.

Both sailors held the Master-at-Arms rating and were assigned to U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain.

Killed were:

Seaman Anamarie Sannicolas Camacho, 20, of Panama City, Fla.

Seaman Genesia Mattril Gresham, 19, of Lithonia, Ga.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Navy "High Rollers" Continue Fighting California Wildfires

10/24/2007 -- NAVAL AIR STATION NORTH ISLAND, CALIF. (NNS) -- Navy firefighting helicopters from the "High Rollers" of Helicopter Sea Combat Support (HSC) 85 based at Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) continued their second day of missions Oct. 23, as they attacked wildfires in San Diego County, supporting the California Department of Forestry (CalFire).

Two MH-60S helicopters were sent up to battle the Harris Ranch Fires in San Diego. Forty other helicopters from NASNI were also on standby to support other mission areas.    » read more »

Sixth Fleet Joint Forces Maritime Component Command ready for action

Oct 15, 2007 -- USS MOUNT WHITNEY, at sea — The U.S. Sixth Fleet Joint Forces Maritime Component Command (JFMCC) staff wrapped up a two-week training evolution while embarked aboard USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20) Oct. 14.

The purpose of the training was to maintain JFMCC staff proficiency and capability to respond effectively to possible contingencies within the United States European Command Area of Responsibility. ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 09, 2007 -- The United States Navy has signed an estimated $93 million contract with Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) for the onboard document needs in support of its entire fleet of 283 vessels. A long-standing customer of Xerox, the contract includes installation, custom mounting, training, supplies and dedicated service worldwide for nearly 3,000 multifunction and production devices, as well as printer software.    » read more »

October 03, 2007 -- The Department of Defense announced today the death of a sailor who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Petty Officer Third Class Mark R. Cannon, 31, of Lubbock, Texas died Oct. 2 while conducting combat operations in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

Cannon was a hospital corpsman assigned to 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

John Murtha: EOC Awarded $25 million Competitive Navy Contract

September 26, 2007 -- (Washington D.C.) -- Congressman John P. Murtha, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, announced today that the Penn State Electro-Optics Center (EOC), Freeport, PA, has been awarded a $25,000,000 competitive contract from the U.S. Navy to support the development and transition of electro-optic technology.

The five year contract, awarded by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, Patuxent River, MD, involves development, engineering and integration of electro-optic subsystems to support Naval Air platforms.    » read more »

Petty Officer Second Class Charles Luke Milam, 26, of Littleton, Colorado, died September 25, while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Milam was a hospital corpsman assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Commander, Naval Activities United Kingdom Disestablished

9/14/2007 -- RAF DAWS HILL, England (NNS) -- Commander, Naval Activities United Kingdom (CNAUK) disestablished Sept. 14 in a ceremony held at Royal Air Force Base Daws Hill.

For 55 years, CNAUK has been the only major U.S. Navy command in the United Kingdom. Once home to Naval Forces Europe, CNAUK served as an administrative agent supporting Commanders Naval Forces Europe, Atlantic and units throughout Western Europe.    » read more »
