NASA Flies to Antarctica for Largest Airborne Polar Ice Survey
Oct. 8, 2009 -- WASHINGTON -- NASA begins a series of flights Oct. 15 to study changes to Antarctica's sea ice, glaciers and ice sheets. The flights are part of Operation Ice Bridge, a six-year campaign that is the largest airborne survey ever made of ice at Earth's polar regions.
Researchers will work from NASA's DC-8, an airborne laboratory equipped with laser mapping instruments, ice-penetrating radar and gravity instruments. Data collected from the mission will help scientists better predict how changes to the massive Antarctic ice sheet will contribute to future sea level rise around the world. » read more »

Bingaman, Udall: Senate Approves Bill That Funds Projects at White Sands Missile Range
October 6, 2009 -- WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall today voted to approve a spending bill that contains more than $45 million dollars to support national defense efforts, including work at White Sands Missile Range and various New Mexico universities.
The Senate passed the fiscal year 2010 Defense Spending Bill (93-07); the measure must now be reconciled with the bill passed by the House of Representatives.
"This spending bill funds projects in our state that are critical to our nation's defense. I'm especially pleased that we are providing $6 million to support the National Guard's effective counter-drug activities along the border," Bingaman said. » read more »

Hawaii to Receive $11 Million for Medical Research Projects
October 1, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hawaii will receive more than $11 million to fund 31 medical research projects including HIV and cancer studies, Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Daniel K. Akaka announced today.
The $11,056,080 grant comes from the Department of Health and Human Services and is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
"Securing funding for research that could one day lead to the prevention and eradication of deadly diseases is a vital part of our work in Washington," said Senator Inouye. Air Pollutants From Abroad a Growing Concern, Says New Report
Sept. 29, 2009 -- WASHINGTON -- Plumes of harmful air pollutants can be transported across oceans and continents -- from Asia to the United States and from the United States to Europe -- and have a negative impact on air quality far from their original sources, says a new report by the National Research Council.
Although degraded air quality is nearly always dominated by local emissions, the influence of non-domestic pollution sources may grow as emissions from developing countries increase and become relatively more important as a result of tightening environmental protection standards in industrialized countries. » read more »
