New Thai Prime Minister Takes Office

29 January 2008 -- Thailand's new prime minister, Samak Sundaravej, was inaugurated Tuesday after receiving the endorsement of the nation's king.

During a speech in the capital, Bangkok, Mr. Samak asked the public for time to prove himself as a leader. Mr. Samak, who heads the People Power Party, says he is a politician and knows political ways and governance.

His speech followed King Bhumibol Adulyadej's ratification of his appointment as prime minister during a ceremony earlier in the day.    » read more »

September 25, 2007 -- Washington, D.C. – A bipartisan group of senators is calling for the protection of Hmong refugees in Thailand. In a letter sent to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today, Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI), Norm Coleman (R-MN), Herb Kohl (D-WI), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) expressed concern for the 156 Hmong refugees being held at the Nong Khai detention center in Thailand. The senators want the State Department to continue seeking protection and assistance for the detainees in Nong Khai.

Flight Data Recorders Recovered from Thai Plane Wreckage

17 September 2007 -- Thai investigators have found both flight data recorders from a passenger plane that crash-landed on the resort island of Phuket, killing at least 89 of the 130 passengers and crew on board.

The devices will be sent to the United States for analysis, a process expected to take at least a week. Authorities hope the information will help explain why the plane crashed on the airport runway while landing in heavy rain and strong winds Sunday.    » read more »

16 September 2007 -- Officials in southern Thailand say they fear most of the 130 people aboard a passenger jet died when the airplane crashed in the resort of Phuket. Thai officials say a plane crash on the southern resort island of Phuket has killed 88 people and injured 42.
