Denver's Top Plastic Surgeon Applauds Recent FDA Breast Implant Ruling

DENVER, April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Food and Drug Administration advisory panel in a 7-2 vote recommended that Mentor Corp's silicone breast implants be approved for unrestricted sale on the US market. This surprising turnaround comes on the heels of a recent decision to block the approval of rival implant maker Inamed's silicone implants.While Mentor is still awaiting final FDA approval, Dr. John A Grossman M.D., a board certified plastic surgeon since 1975, calls the FDA's actions "a victory for science over fear and gossip."

"The FDA has at long last accepted what many of us in the industry have known for some time. Silicone implants do not cause disease. It is true that silicone implants, as with any manmade device, can become worn and break with time, but the material inside is safe. Hopefully this ruling by the FDA advisory panel will return science and research to the forefront of the approval process instead of politics."

Dr. Grossman strongly believes that silicone implants deserve to be given final approval for general use, and the vast data that will become available through ongoing clinical research will further exonerate them.

Last year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, about 264,000 breast augmentations and 75,000 breast reconstructions were performed in the United States, most with salt water-filled implants that are sold without restriction.
